Places I've Wandered - Beyond Renfrew To Cowichan - Bathroom Break Exploration
We were awake before dawn to catch the sun rising over Mt.Baker from Gonzalez Hill in Victoria. Then we encountered the gate outside the Sooke Potholes and instead explored a tiny glimpse of the Sooke River. Next was the drive to Botanical Beach and many hours exploring one of the jewels in the crown of Vancouver Island's Kick-Assery of wonder.
Then we ate discount lunch by the SubaRuby. Rested our feet and eyes. And hit the back road towards Lake Cowichan. Come along. It'll be fun. Bring a friend. Bring your green hat.
oh and FYI we're still fairly near the sea and Port San Juan (which is still the name of the bay though they changed the town's name to Port Renfrew to avoid mail errors with the San Juan Islands. I mean to honour Lord Renfrew (who may or may not have been related to Baron Renfrew of Kaimsthorn who has a kick-butt title AND is also a very smart dude.)
umm.. lets get across the river now. Or at least the first limb of it.
ok so now we're on the single vehicle bridge to an island in the river.
The back road to Cowichan was formally paved and upscaled in 2009. Now it's all classy like and driveable as a loop from/to Victoria provided the road isn't washed out by Mother Nature.
almost off of the island in the river on an island. It is pretty pretty terrain round these parts.
And then we were given a sign.
and off once more into the rainforest we went
as we passed by Fairy Lake we noticed a Canucks fan had placed an indicator of their support upon a tree growing out of a deadhead in the mystical waters.
Now a moment's pause to consider bathroom breaks.
Many people give such breaks and smaller bladdered peoples hard times. But really, while they're looking for a discreet place to take care of business...
it gives one the opportunity to explore rarely explored places!
especially if you pull off of the road and explore around bridge footings ;)
so lets walk past SubaRuby
and enter the forest proper..
oh sweet sweet temperate rainforest.. how I love thee
with abundant ferny wonder growing off of the moss covering sections of tree
The rainforest grows right to the edge of the creek.
Moss hangs overhead draping with wonder
sword ferns unfurl and reach up
all trees tell stories.. if we know how to read them
and now it's time to get back in the car and drive further into the forest towards where the big trees grow...
see you soon ;)
