Perched a mount, on high... a time to rest and catch breath
The rocks cried out and whispered "Be wary, be wary, beware. They lie, they lay, they lie."
we cautiously continued along the shoreline still
take to the hills and the cliff's face to scurry about and around.. to no avail..
The chasm loomed.. insurmountable.. inviting.. mocking and challenging
"dive in, vault over, you can do it."
A face emerged from the stone.. beckoning us to enter
it tempted then taunted...
"Enter my waters.. I offer safe passage.. welcome my children to you"
"They will guide you and care for you"
"Caress and take away your worries"
Lies foul lies all! The Island Alpinist and I turned aside and stumbled towards the cliffs only to come closer to that which filled us with dread. A cavern most cavernous with pink cotton candy like fauna spread across the stones. An aroma enticed and more promises wafted forth on the breeze.
"Come this way to safety" the voice whispered. "Climb the rope to safety".
That rope did not look safe at all! With great care we scaled the cliff face and looked out over our near demise to the mythic chasm below.
A booming voice called to us from the forest! The noble old tree festooned with moss and weary from long labourous buffeting by the wind greeted us and encouraged us. I trust trees. They're good people.
At least these guys were.
They gave us some advice for which we shall be eternally greatful and we continued to hazard our way through the rainforest. Around and away from the chasm in search of the sea once more.
We would have to find a way to descend to the forest floor... the way lay to the right.
A look back first though.. to the sun and the sea and the land we leave behind. Fierce shoreline seen from within our protective forest.
The Island Alpinist walks amongst the foliages
and they guide us
they shelter and suggest for us
and with our spirits reinvigorated by our woodland friends we prepare once more to strike forth come what may.
Come what may.
