Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.4 - Unto the Mythologic
Perched a mount, on high... a time to rest and catch breath
The rocks cried out and whispered "Be wary, be wary, beware. They lie, they lay, they lie."
we cautiously continued along the shoreline still
take to the hills and the cliff's face to scurry about and around.. to no avail..
The chasm loomed.. insurmountable.. inviting.. mocking and challenging
"dive in, vault over, you can do it."
A face emerged from the stone.. beckoning us to enter
it tempted then taunted...
"Enter my waters.. I offer safe passage.. welcome my children to you"
"They will guide you and care for you"
"Caress and take away your worries"
Lies foul lies all! The Island Alpinist and I turned aside and stumbled towards the cliffs only to come closer to that which filled us with dread. A cavern most cavernous with pink cotton candy like fauna spread across the stones. An aroma enticed and more promises wafted forth on the breeze.
"Come this way to safety" the voice whispered. "Climb the rope to safety".
That rope did not look safe at all! With great care we scaled the cliff face and looked out over our near demise to the mythic chasm below.
A booming voice called to us from the forest! The noble old tree festooned with moss and weary from long labourous buffeting by the wind greeted us and encouraged us. I trust trees. They're good people.
At least these guys were.
They gave us some advice for which we shall be eternally greatful and we continued to hazard our way through the rainforest. Around and away from the chasm in search of the sea once more.
We would have to find a way to descend to the forest floor... the way lay to the right.
A look back first though.. to the sun and the sea and the land we leave behind. Fierce shoreline seen from within our protective forest.
The Island Alpinist walks amongst the foliages
and they guide us
they shelter and suggest for us
and with our spirits reinvigorated by our woodland friends we prepare once more to strike forth come what may.
Come what may.

PIW - Botanical Beach Pt.3 - To Conquer the Grotto
The Shorts and Gaiters Inaugural Adventure took place on June 5th and 6th of 2011. Karsten Klawitter (aka the Island Alpinist) and I have been on many wild and wonderous photoadventures and decided to take two days to explore the heck out of several sites around Southern Vancouver Island.
1 Places I've Wandered - Gonzalez Hill Sunrise
2 Places I've Wandered - Not Sooke Potholes
3 In Transit - From Sooke River to Botanical Beach
4 Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach pt.1
5 Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.2 - Bear!
6 Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.3 - Intertidal Action & Emergency Bathroom
7 Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.4 - To Conquer the Grotto
Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.3 - To Conquer the Grotto
Come join our intrepid adventurers transitioning to a more shale sedimentary shoreline
as they leave the sandstone behind.
the water carves and creates protected havens for life to flourish
In other areas of no protection it scours clean. Notice how the rainforest encroaches as close as it may.
Storms and seas that toss around logs as if they were nothing. Placing them over carved rock and a hiding place for certain adventurers.
We near another headland...
Safe for now at low tide we explore around the foot of the headland. Faced with a slippery shelf we walk closer, turning a corner to discover...
a way further in and further up
The foot of the dark forest alongside the seashore, but we turned again to the sea and the sun.
Where flowers bloom
and we pause for a moment to contemplate
to be continued...

Leaving the pointed prominence behind we make our way along a more "traditional" cove of a beach. Except that it has sweet rocky goodness thrusting up through it!
Followed by this lovely little casa with a view. (And a threat to bullkelp monsters to stay back)
Around the point and out onto another shelf of rock swept and carved by waves. Oh Inter-tidal zone.. how I love you.
Here the waves break and erode over the course of time. Revealing the layers and forces that have shaped the land and created the various micro-climates in which the multitudes of life can dwell and thrive.
Some most ancient
Out to the open Pacific
A rare photo of me taken by the Island Alpinist. If one has to use the washroom and is stranded on the highly visible shelf of rock they could possibly use this hole at low tide.
As demonstrated here.
No I didn't
It would also be a poor place to drop your keys
While in the hole I saw some Goose Barnacles!!! :D (Also K's beloved "Manpris" lol)
Which is awesome because on our last trip there we found mysterious chunks of sea creature
Happy Goose Barnacles
We'll end today's post as the Island Alpinist and I make our way from one section of sedimentary rock to another
Next time we shall explore this new land further and he'll probably scamper about and hang off of things ;)
Till we meet again, may you all walk in wonder,

Places I've Wandered - Botanical Beach June 2011 Pt.2 - Bear!
Botanical Beach on Vancouver Island is one of my favourite places in the world. And hours of exploration each trip still reveal amazing things! Let's continue our exploration now
Look around and see what you can find.. engage in life and you'll not be disappointed
Then in the distance we saw it...
This is the second time we've discovered a black bear walking along the shoreline at low tide eating sea urchins from their little nooks
In front of the bear's right paw can be seen a purple blob aka sea urchin
Here's a photo of a sea urchin's shell from which the multitude of spikes emanate
The Island Alpinist walked to a higher vantage point and I worked a distant flanking maneuver
The bear was content working its way out to the point
Occasionally we'd get a pause and a look from the bear. But we were still far away and being very non-threatening and it would always just get back to casually eating the sealife.
I dub this to be Bear Rock
It was a great delight to spend quite awhile observing the bear about it's foraging but eventually we had to move on for there was much beach and many more kilometers to cover before we were to fall asleep on the top of Mt.Prevost in Duncan, BC.
So on we go along the beach (I think I have an idea about where that black rock may have come from... )
See you around the next bend!
